Overview:

We are looking for a proactive, self-starter to join the Blackhawk tax team.

This position would ideally be located in the Phoenix office of BHN.

However, we would be open for this position to be a work from home position/Pleasanton based position for the right candidate.

This Senior Manager (i) is a member of the internal Tax group and key tax leadership of BHN (which management is in the Pleasanton, CA headquarters office), (ii) will report to the Vice President Global Tax and Treasury in the Pleasanton office, and (iii) will daily manage a small team of dedicated tax professionals in Phoenix.

Responsibilities:
Manage the daily Indirect Tax compliance function for all Blackhawk entities in both U.S.

and Canada ensuring that all sales/use, B&O, E911, GST/HST/QST/PST tax returns are completed and timely filed.

Continue proactive review of nexus exposures for each BHN affiliate (US & Canada) based on new activities considering state and country rules and regulations to ensure ongoing compliance and making resulting yes/no registration decisions for additional tax jurisdictions, as needed.

Supervise and approve the monthly process of GL tax account reconciliations for internal controls and preparation of tax returns.

Manage monthly preparation of all BHN US and Canada entity indirect tax returns, review activity being reported, ensure the ACH debit forms are completed properly, and approve/authorize the Accounts Payable and Treasury GL entries for tax compliance within managerial limits.

Manage small staff of professional tax accountants; promote healthy and productive work environment and assist staff with achieving their work goals and growth within Blackhawk.

Manage the Personal Property Tax reporting processes for all company US locations; review fixed assets inventory, work with 3rd party vendor on PPT filings, appeals and related compliance.

Supervise in-house renewals of sales, use, and business licenses for all US & Canada entities Manage multiple tax software platforms utilized for tax compliance processes, being proactive in setting up new programs and adjustments to those existing in order to streamline functionality.

Manage state SUT audits and Voluntary Disclosure processes; work with state auditors to achieve optimal results for Blackhawk.

Manage the unclaimed property liabilities/process of Blackhawk, including responsibility for handling the existing and future audits, working with our settlement and accounting teams to gather required data, as well as working with our M&A and business development teams in assessing/quantifying unclaimed property risks in both acquisitive and business expansion activities.

Assist and advise upper management and internal company stakeholders with indirect tax analysis and related projects as needed.

Maintain productive relationships with other BHN functional departments and participate/advise effectively in cross-functional projects involving aspects of indirect tax compliance.

Assist in occasional federal/state income tax compliance, as needed.

Qualifications:
Minimum 7-10 years demonstrable broad experience in all aspects of US multi-state sales/use tax compliance reporting, returns preparation, research, and related tax accounting; tax audit defense; Voluntary Disclosure Agreement processes.

Demonstrable compliance experience with Canadian indirect taxes of all types; experience with Mexican and other foreign VAT is a plus.

Previous/current experience managing a professional tax staff.

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax or related business field Preferred: Masters in Tax / Accounting Preferred: active CPA certificate Demonstrable facility with and knowledge of one or more common ERP platforms; experience with Microsoft Dynamics and/or Alteryx is a plus.

Regular experience with implementation and compliance engagement of tax software applications and their interplay with ERP systems (examples: Vertex, Avalara, Sales Tax Online (STO), SureTax) Excellent writing and verbal communication skills; ability to research complex SUT and related tax issues and effectively communicate findings in writing to management and internal stakeholders.

Ability to issue spot and proactively develop indirect tax compliance solutions in a fast-paced FinTech environment with evolving business models and systems.
